The first task is to understand the slab. Look for weak or dusty concrete, cracks, pits, joints, oil, grease, adhesive, paint, curing compounds and signs of moisture. Note drains, slopes, edges, curbs and areas repaired in the past. A coating cannot hide every structural or water problem. Some conditions need repair or further investigation before a flooring system is chosen.
Tell the estimator how old the slab is, how the room is heated, and whether water has entered before. If an old coating is peeling, record where and under what use. This information can help separate surface wear from a deeper issue. A clean visual inspection is useful, but moisture or adhesion questions may require testing.
Why is mechanical preparation commonly discussed?
Grinding, shot blasting or another suitable method can remove weak surface material and create a profile for the new coating. The method must fit the slab, coating and work area. Dust and debris must then be removed. Edges and tight spaces need attention as well as the open floor. Acid washing or simple pressure washing is not automatically equal to a specified mechanical profile.

No. A stable surface crack, a control joint and an actively moving crack do not serve the same purpose. Repairs should match the condition and the selected system. Filling a joint that is intended to move can create a new failure point. Severely damaged or unsound concrete may need removal and repair rather than a cosmetic fill.
How does moisture change the plan?
Water vapour moving through concrete can affect adhesion and may lead to bubbles or other failures in some systems. Visible dryness at the surface does not answer every moisture question. If the history or location suggests risk, ask about the test method, product moisture limits and possible mitigation. Active water entry or drainage problems should be addressed at their source.
Which finish comes after preparation?
Once the slab and use are understood, compare polyaspartic systems, garage coatings, or decorative finishes. The final choice should account for traffic, sunlight, chemicals, cleaning, texture and appearance. Preparation is the common base that allows those finish choices to be considered honestly.
